Notice and urgency

More notice gives us room to plan travel and paperwork. A request for tomorrow leaves fewer options and can affect the price. If your date is fixed, tell us early.

Courier time

The courier stays with the shipment from pickup to delivery. Waiting at a clinic, a delayed flight or an overnight stay is courier time, and it is part of the cost.

Shipper

The type of shipper and how long it must hold temperature for the trip affect the price. A longer trip needs more planning on the shipper side.

Number of straws or embryos

The courier's time is the main cost, not the count of embryos. A very large number of straws may need more than one shipper, so tell us the number when you ask for a quote.

Insurance

Ask what the quote covers if something goes wrong and what the limits are. It should be written down in the quote.

The shipper has to be prepared and kept at temperature, the paperwork has to match at both ends, and the courier has to be on the move for as long as the trip takes. When you compare quotes, check for these warning signs:

• The shipment goes as cargo and is not hand-carried
• There is no signed custody record at pickup and delivery
• Nobody can tell you how the shipment is protected from X-ray screening
• The quote does not say what is included
