Embryo Transport from the USA to Port Harcourt
We have done this run. Houston to Port Harcourt, embryos in a dry shipper, carried in the cabin by our founder. You cannot fly it in one hop, which is the single fact that shapes everything about how a Port Harcourt transfer should be planned.
Why that matters more than it sounds. Our founder is Nigerian-American and needs no visa to enter Nigeria. The usual reason a US–Nigeria hand-carry slips a week is a courier waiting on travel authorisation. On this corridor, that failure mode is simply not on our list.
The defining feature of this route: you cannot fly it in one segment
Port Harcourt International Airport (PHC) at Omagwa serves regional and some international traffic, but it is not reached directly from the United States. Every US to Port Harcourt transfer therefore involves at least one connection, most commonly a domestic leg from Lagos, or a connection through a European or Middle Eastern hub.
That single fact should drive how the shipment is planned. The risk on this corridor does not sit in the long-haul segment, which is scheduled and reliable. It sits in the connection, where a delay can extend the total journey well beyond the plan.
How we plan around it
We specify the dry vapor shipper's validated hold time against the realistic worst case for your routing, which means the journey duration including a missed connection and a rebooking, not the duration on the itinerary. That is the margin that matters.
And because a person is travelling with the shipper, a missed connection is something that gets rebooked in the terminal by someone holding your specimens, with both laboratories told what is happening. On an unattended consignment the same event is a tracking status that changes.
Clearance happens at the port of entry
If your specimens route through Lagos, they are cleared in Lagos, not in Port Harcourt, and then travel on domestically. This decides which documents are presented where and who must be reachable on the day. Settle it before departure.
What the journey looks like end to end
Before departure
Release authorisation signed at the US clinic, written acceptance obtained from the Port Harcourt clinic, inventory documented, import documentation assembled, and a collection window agreed with the releasing laboratory. This phase sets your real timeline.
Collection in the US
The courier collects the charged dry vapor shipper directly from the releasing embryology laboratory, verifies the inventory against the manifest, and takes custody in person.
Long-haul segment
The courier travels with the shipper in the aircraft cabin. Documentation is presented at each security checkpoint with a request for visual inspection rather than X-ray screening.
Port of entry and clearance
Clearance is completed at the first Nigerian airport of arrival. On a Lagos routing this happens in Lagos, and the specimens then continue on a domestic leg to Port Harcourt.
Delivery in Port Harcourt
The shipper is handed directly to the named embryologist or laboratory manager at the receiving clinic, the inventory is verified against the manifest, and confirmation of receipt is issued. Monitoring data is provided afterwards.
On timing. The flying is typically completed within roughly two days depending on routing and connections. Phase one is what sets your real calendar, because release authorisation, clinic acceptance and import documentation all have to be complete before travel begins. Start several weeks ahead of any date that matters.
The cold chain over a two-leg journey
Your embryos travel vitrified in a dry shipper at roughly -190°C. There is no free liquid nitrogen inside it, which is precisely why an airline will let it into the cabin. Elsewhere you will see -196°C claimed; that is liquid nitrogen's boiling point, not the vapor space the specimens occupy. Below about -130°C is what matters biologically, and we operate nowhere near that line.
On a two-leg route the honest question is not how cold it gets but how long it stays cold. We charge the shipper against a worst case that assumes you miss the Lagos connection and wait for the next one, not against the printed schedule. The monitoring data comes to you after delivery.
The part we cannot promise
Customs can hold a shipment, and no transport company can guarantee it will not. Anyone who tells you their Nigeria service is frictionless has either been lucky or is not being straight with you.
What hand-carry buys you is not immunity from that, it is a person standing in the room while it happens, with the paperwork, able to answer a question directly instead of a container waiting unattended for an email to be read.
